Preconception Nutritional Recommendations

A. Women should receive information regarding importance of nutrition before they become pregnant rather than during. Don't worry if this is not the case for you. Make the changes as soon as you find out or if there is a possibility you may be pregnant.

B. Maternal nutrition status interacts with a host of other factors to determine reproductive outcome.

C. Research shows nutritional deficiencies immediately before and at the time of conception has adverse effects on pregnancy, whereas deprivation during the latter part of pregnancy has little effect on pregnancy.

D. Human epidemiological studies have linked maternal malnutrition during famine to adverse pregnancy outcomes. Severe dietary restriction before and during pregnancy appears to increase the risk of LBW and congenital abnormalities, particularly of the central nervous system.

E. Extensive literature review indicates that levels of nutrients and minerals during the embryonic period (4-8 weeks) are critical for favorable reproductive outcomes.

F. Women who are underweight at conception are 50% more likely to have LBW infants than their normal weight counterparts.
